Spanner Prostate Q & A
What is a Spanner prostate stent?
A Spanner prostate stent is a temporary stent that allows you to urinate normally. The stent is entirely internal, so you don’t have a urine drainage bag like you would with a Foley catheter.
With the Spanner prostate stent, you can reclaim your normal lifestyle with an easy outpatient procedure at YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness.
Who needs a Spanner prostate stent?
Many men with an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), need a minimally invasive procedure, after which they receive a catheter. After the post-treatment catheterization, you can come to YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness for a Spanner prostate stent.
If you want to avoid the inconvenience and frustration of a Foley catheter, a Spanner prostate stent could be an ideal solution. The Spanner stent can help you urinate more comfortably during recovery from your BPH procedure.
How is the Spanner prostate stent inserted?
The stent requires only a quick outpatient procedure. You receive a numbing gel through the tip of your penis before the procedure starts. This ensures a virtually painless stent installation.
Your doctor inserts the Spanner stent, which includes a thin tube with a tiny balloon near its tip, into your penis using a specialized insertion device. The stent moves forward until the tip, including the balloon, is just inside your bladder.
Sterile water is used to inflate the balloon. This balloon keeps the stent in position while the tube holds your urethra open for normal urine drainage.
A tiny retrieval string extends just beyond the end of the penis. Don’t touch or pull this string, as it’s keeping the stent in place.
What are the advantages of the Spanner prostate stent?
The advantages of a Spanner prostate stent include:
- No urine drainage bag
- No external components
- Normal urination using a urinal or toilet
- Improved urinary efficiency
- No restrictions for use
- Reduced infection risk
- Unrestricted sexual activity
The Spanner stent can give you freedom from the restrictive Foley catheter, so talk to the YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness team about how it can work for you.
How long do I wear the Spanner stent?
You can wear the Spanner stent continuously for up to 30 days. You then return to YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness for removal, which is a simple outpatient procedure.
If you’re facing a BPH procedure and want the easiest possible transition away from the post-treatment catheter, the Spanner stent could be a great choice for you. Call YOU & WEE Urologic Surgery & Wellness or click the online scheduler to book your consultation.
